007 First Light is IO Interactive's third-person James Bond action-adventure, an origin story in which a 26-year-old Bond (Patrick Gibson), a "promising but rebellious Royal Navy air crewman", is recruited into MI6's newly revived 00 program. It plays as stealth action with a choice of approach: Bond scans a room with his Q-Watch for distractions, uses Q Branch gadgets such as a laser and a smoke device powered by resources he finds, and talks, sneaks or fights his way past guards (Stealth and Disguises, Gadgets). It came out on May 27, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam, the Epic Games Store and the Microsoft Store), after 24-hour early access for digital pre-orders from May 26, and the Nintendo Switch 2 version is dated Mar 18, 2027 (IOI, Oct 14, 2026). What is 007 First Light?

007 First Light is a single-player spy game in which you play James Bond before he is 007. IO Interactive, the Danish studio behind Hitman, calls it a "fully original, re-imagined origin story of a young James Bond" that joins its stealth-action play to a cinematic story. It is not an adaptation of a film or a novel, and it does not tie into the films: Insider Gaming reports that IOI and Amazon MGM chose to have it "live alongside the future of 007" rather than join the film canon. The setting is the present day.

IOI announced the game as Project 007 on Nov 19, 2020, promising "the very first James Bond origin story" in which players "earn their 00 status". It was named and dated at a dedicated State of Play on Sep 3, 2025 for Mar 27, 2026, then moved two months to May 27, 2026 on Dec 23, 2025. Every date, the early access hours and the history of the delays are on Release Date and Times; the four editions, from the $69.99 Standard to the $299.99 Legacy Edition, are on Editions and Prices.

It runs on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with Xbox Play Anywhere on the Microsoft Store, and it is not on Game Pass or PlayStation Plus (Shacknews, May 26, 2026); the stores, ratings and languages are on Platforms and Game Pass. The PC version needs an SSD and 80 GB of space (PC System Requirements), and since Sep 15, 2026 it offers full path tracing with NVIDIA (PC Performance and Path Tracing). Console frame rates and modes, including the 60 fps mode Xbox Series S gained in October, are on PS5 and Xbox Performance Modes.

The story

Bond's exploits in Iceland catch MI6's eye, and he is pulled into the revived 00 program under John Greenway (Lennie James), a former 00 agent who trains recruits by the book and clashes with Bond's improvising. The official premise is to follow Bond as "a young, resourceful, and sometimes reckless recruit". When a rogue former operative, 009, resurfaces, his return becomes the program's "first true field test", and Bond and Greenway have to work together despite their differences. Kotaku's review describes a story about his training, his first MI6 mission and the fight over whether the 00s should exist at all.

The trail leads through eight places on IOI's list: Iceland, MI6 in London, Malta, the Grand Carpathian Hotel in Slovakia, the black market of Aleph in Mauritania, Kensington, Vietnam and Antarctica. The plot, with its twists kept under a heading that warns of spoilers, is on Story; what the last mission means is on Ending Explained, which spoils everything from its first line.

The missions

IOI's own patch notes number the campaign's missions 00 to 10: Against the Odds, The Needle's Eye, A Night Out, All the Time in the World, The Past Never Dies (with Beyond the Grave), Uninvited, Knightfall, Time to Die, Wave of the Future and For England. Guide sites count differently: Beebom, PowerPyx and Gfinity list 17 chapters, 10 played and 7 told mostly in cutscenes, such as In His Majesty's Secret Service and Going Old School. Both lists, side by side and in order, are on Missions List, and each played mission has its own walkthrough page.

The early missions are short: Beebom timed the Iceland opener at 13 minutes. The later ones are long, open stretches, such as the 57 minutes it gives the Grand Carpathian Hotel in Slovakia and the hour and 45 minutes of Wave of the Future in Antarctica. Adding up Beebom's chapter times gives about 15 hours without side content, which matches the 15 to 20 hours most reviews and guides give (How Long to Beat).

Each played mission hides collectibles, 92 in all by PowerPyx's count, and challenges to complete; the full lists are on Collectibles and Trophies and Achievements. Safes and keypads take codes found in the level, gathered on Safe Codes and Passwords.

Gameplay: stealth, gadgets, combat and driving

IOI calls the design the "Creative Approach": you reach each objective by sneaking, by going in loud, or by mixing the two, and IOI splits it into four parts, Spycraft, Instinct, Gadgets and Combat. Spycraft is eavesdropping, lifting keycards and reading the level for shortcuts; Instinct is a meter that refills as you complete objectives and lets Bond lure a guard, bluff his way out of trouble or slow time for a shot. Reviewers kept comparing it to Hitman: Game Rant called it "Hitman meets Uncharted", stealth from IOI's assassin games and set pieces from Naughty Dog's. How the two compare is on 007 First Light vs Hitman.

Stealth is forgiving. Getting caught is "rarely a death sentence", full stealth is never required, and Bond can bluff past a suspicious guard with a button press, though some characters are immune. He disguises himself, as a helicopter crew member in Iceland or a yoga instructor later, and talks his way into places, as Stealth and Disguises explains. Bodies cannot be moved or hidden, which Hardcore Gamer counted as one way the stealth is shallower than Hitman's.

Q Branch supplies the gadgets: the always-ready Q-Lens, which shows enemies through walls, the Q-Watch, which hacks electronics and fires a laser, the Laser Strap, the Dart Phone, the Flash Mine, the Smoke Pod and the Missile Pen. Bond carries only a few per mission, and they run on batteries and chemicals that one use can drain by half or more, a limit PlayStation LifeStyle found too tight. Every gadget, its unlock and its upgrades are on Gadgets.

Close combat: a man in a brown jacket swings at a guard with a black face covering and a vest, pine trees and mountains behind.

When it comes to a fight, Bond uses takedowns, parries and side-steps up close and pistols, rifles and shotguns at range, with a slow-motion Focus shot; Combat and Takedowns and Weapons cover both. Bond does not grow stronger as the story goes on: he is "physically capable from the start", and progress comes from new gadgets and their upgrades, bought with Intel. Driving comes in set pieces rather than an open world, such as an escape through London in a bin lorry; TheSixthAxis called it "serviceable" and the chases infrequent (Driving and Chases).

There are three difficulties from the start, which guides call Novice, Intended and Purist (IOI's own Steam post says Easy, Normal and Hard), and a fourth, 00, since October (Difficulty Settings). New players should start with the Beginner's Guide; button layouts are on Controls and the settings for players with disabilities on Accessibility.

TacSim and post-launch updates

TacSim is MI6's tactical simulation, run by Dr. Selina Tan (Gemma Chan): replays of story spaces with modifiers called Game Changers, three-tier Escalations, Operations and online leaderboards. It pays in Intel, and Clearance Levels gate weapons and outfits you cannot get in the story. It needs an internet connection, while the campaign plays offline. Everything about it is on TacSim, and every unlockable outfit and its price is on Outfits and Unlocks.

IOI has kept adding to it. Update 1.1.0, "Behind Enemy Lines", brought two Escalations and four new rewards on Jul 24, 2026. The PC path tracing update followed on Sep 15, 2026. Then came the largest so far: Extended Operations, a free DLC in update 1.3.0 on Oct 1, 2026, with "over 700 fixes". It added:

  • New Game Plus, with Mission Warderobe (IOI's spelling) and Gadget on Demand.
  • The 00 Difficulty, the hardest way to play, after one finish.
  • Photo Mode.
  • Valhalla Protocol, four TacSim missions in an armed Aston Martin Valhalla, playable from Oct 5.
  • Jungle Heist, a new TacSim operation at The Pearl in Vietnam.
  • A 60 fps Performance Mode on Xbox Series S.

Two hotfixes have followed, 1.3.1 on Oct 7 and 1.3.2 on Oct 29, 2026, the second adding three outfits. Every patch, with its date, size and fixes, is on Patch Notes and Updates. What IOI's Year One Roadmap of Jun 5, 2026 promised and has not yet delivered, such as TacSim content in Mauritania, is tracked there. No paid DLC has been released or priced as of Nov 4, 2026.

When does 007 First Light come to Switch 2?

On Mar 18, 2027. Switch 2 was announced alongside the other platforms in Sep 2025, then split off on Apr 8, 2026 for "later this summer", delayed on Sep 15, 2026 to March 2027 to polish its performance, and dated on Oct 14, 2026, when pre-orders opened. It is sold as a Deluxe Edition at $69.99 with a GoldenEye Suit, and IOI has published no resolution or frame rate for it. The details are on Nintendo Switch 2 Version.

Is 007 First Light good?

Critics think so. On review day, May 26, 2026, OpenCritic showed 89 and Metacritic 88, and TheGamer called it the best Bond game since GoldenEye by review scores. On Nov 4, 2026 the OpenCritic Top Critic Average is 87 and Metacritic gives 87 on PS5, 88 on Xbox Series X and 84 on PC. IGN gave it 9/10 and GameSpot 8/10; The Guardian and VGC gave 5/5, and PC Gamer was the low outlier at 65/100. Players agree: Steam's reviews are Very Positive, 90% of 19,713 in English, as of Nov 4, 2026.

Critics praised the Bond feel, the cast and the freedom inside missions. The complaints were familiarity, slow information-gathering stretches at the start of missions, guards that are easily fooled, and the driving. Scores by outlet and what each said are on Reviews.

It also sold. IOI reported 1.5 million copies in its first 24 hours, its fastest-selling launch, ahead of the biggest Hitman games over the same period; more than 2.7 million in a week; and 4 million in three months, on Aug 20, 2026. On Steam it peaked at 71,073 players at once on May 31, 2026, as SteamDB measured, which the chart at the top of this page shows; the figures are on Sales and Players. Its Golden Joystick nominations, with the ceremony on Nov 11, 2026, are on Awards and Nominations.

The cast

Patrick Gibson, known for Dexter: Original Sin and The OA, plays James Bond, performance captured and face-scanned. The end credits name Lennie James as John Greenway, Priyanga Burford as M, Alastair Mackenzie as Q and Kiera Lester as Moneypenny (M, Q and Moneypenny), Noémie Nakai as Miss Roth, Gemma Chan as Selina Tan in her first video game role, and Lenny Kravitz as Bawma, "The Pirate King". Anthony Howell plays Sir Nicholas Webb, head of Webb Industries. Everyone in the credits, cameos by Shroud and JackSepticEye among them, is on Cast and Characters.

Lana Del Rey sings the title song, "First Light", which she wrote with David Arnold, the composer of five Bond films; it was released on Apr 16, 2026, and the title sequence premiered at the BAFTA Game Awards the next day. The score is by the duo The Flight (Music and Theme Song).

IO Interactive and the Bond games

IO Interactive was founded in Copenhagen in 1998 and has been independent of Square Enix since 2017. It made every Hitman game, from Codename 47 in 2000 to World of Assassination, on its in-house Glacier engine, and it also made Freedom Fighters, Kane & Lynch and Mini Ninjas. 007 First Light follows a line of Bond games that runs from GoldenEye 007 (1997) through NightFire and Everything or Nothing to 007 Legends (2012); the whole list is on James Bond Games in Order.

The license began with MGM, EON Productions and Delphi in 2020; since launch every announcement is from "IO Interactive and Amazon MGM Studios". No sequel is announced as of Nov 4, 2026. Amazon Games' Jeff Gattis said in June that "a sequel should be made" and in July that nothing was decided about who would make it; what each side has said is on Sequel. IOI's next announced game is a new series of its own, codenamed Project Fantasy.

  • James Bond Games in Order

Gameplay

  • Accessibility

007 First Light offers full button remapping with presets, hold toggles, automatic climbing and vaulting, customizable subtitles, menu narration, QTE autocomplete and photosensitivity options. It lacks chase assists and captions for guard alerts, and no source confirms colorblind modes.

  • Combat and Takedowns

Combat in 007 First Light mixes free-flowing hand-to-hand (punches, grabs, parries, side-steps, throws and environmental slams) with gunplay that opens only once Bond earns License to Kill. Focus slows time for precise shots, and takedowns can be silent or loud.

  • Controls

In 007 First Light the Q-Lens is held on L1 (PS5), LB (Xbox) or Alt (PC keyboard), gadgets sit on four buttons fired while holding it, R2 drags or tackles enemies, and the Touchpad opens the collectibles menu. Every button can be remapped. IO Interactive has published no full control list.

  • Difficulty Settings

007 First Light has three difficulty presets from the start, which guides call Novice, Intended and Purist (IOI's own posts say Easy, Normal and Hard), plus the 00 difficulty added on Oct 1, 2026 for players who finish the campaign. Difficulty does not affect trophies or achievements.

  • Driving and Chases

007 First Light has scripted driving and chase set pieces in its campaign, among them a car chase in Slovakia, an escape drive, boat rides and a bin lorry escape in London, plus the armed Aston Martin Valhalla in TacSim's Valhalla Protocol since October 2026. Critics found the driving serviceable but floaty, and there are no chase assists.

  • Gadgets

007 First Light's Q Branch gadgets are the Q-Watch, the always-on Q-Lens, the Dart Phone, the Laser Strap, the Flash Mine, the Smoke Pod, the Missile Pen and the Shockwave Camera. They unlock through the story, run on batteries or chemicals, and are upgraded with Intel earned in TacSim.

  • Outfits and Unlocks

007 First Light's outfits come from the paid editions (four Deluxe outfits, the Specialist Edition's Classic Tuxedo, Obsidian Gold in the Collector's and Legacy), from TacSim unlocks bought with Intel at a Clearance Level, and from free events such as the IOI Account and Twitch drops. The Switch 2 Deluxe Edition adds the GoldenEye Suit.

  • Stealth and Disguises

Stealth in 007 First Light is IO Interactive's Creative Approach: eavesdrop for Opportunities, pickpocket keycards, use Instinct to lure guards or bluff past them, and take on mission-specific roles such as a crew member or event staff. Getting caught is rarely fatal, and full stealth is never required.

  • Weapons

Bond starts 007 First Light with a service pistol and can only fire once License to Kill is earned; more guns are picked up in missions or unlocked in TacSim with Intel and Clearance Level. IOI has named five TacSim unlocks, and Gamewatcher's playthrough lists 22 weapons in all.

Guides

  • Beginner's Guide

For a first run of 007 First Light, play on Intended, scan every area with the Q-Lens, eavesdrop before you act, keep Instinct topped up with takedowns for bluffs, ration batteries and chemicals, and do not worry about missing collectibles, since nothing is missable and Chapter Select opens after the story. TacSim needs a connection and pays the Intel that upgrades gadgets.

  • Collectibles

007 First Light has 92 collectibles: 36 Playing Cards, 23 Intel files, 14 Mementos, 10 Postcards and 9 Legacy Items, none of them missable. Finding them all unlocks the Gold trophy A collector's habit.

  • How Long to Beat

007 First Light's story takes about 15 to 20 hours; reviewers finished in 13 to 18.5 hours, IO Interactive pointed to about 20 for an average player, and everything, the platinum included, takes about 20 hours by PowerPyx's count or 30 to 35 by Beebom's.

  • Safe Codes and Passwords

Every code in 007 First Light is fixed for every player: the hotel laundry door 1805 and Manager's Office safe 1952, the museum CCTV password Password12 and maintenance door 3256, the penthouse safe 1493, the armory 1324, the Q-03 cabinet 4397 and the Antarctica archive door 1864.

  • Trophies and Achievements

007 First Light has 38 PlayStation trophies (1 Platinum, 3 Gold, 14 Silver, 20 Bronze) and 37 achievements on Steam and Xbox, 19 of them hidden on Steam. PowerPyx rates the platinum 2/10 at about 20 hours in one playthrough, with nothing missable.

Missions

  • A Night Out

A Night Out is 007 First Light's third mission (IO Interactive's 02), a recruits' night at a London nightclub that turns into a field exercise, with four routes upstairs, cameos by JackSepticEye and Chase & Status, 2 collectibles and about 23 minutes of play.

  • Against the Odds

Against the Odds is 007 First Light's first mission (IO Interactive's 00), a prologue in Iceland where Bond, unarmed, infiltrates a research camp taken over by mercenaries, finds an antidote and frees the captives. It takes about 13 minutes and holds 4 collectibles and 9 challenges.

  • All the Time in the World

All the Time in the World is 007 First Light's fourth mission (IO Interactive's 03), set at the World Chess Championship in the Grand Carpathian Hotel in Slovakia; the Manager's Office safe code is 1952 and the laundry door is 1805. It runs about an hour, with 27 challenges and 9 collectibles.

  • For England

For England is the last mission of 007 First Light, mission 10 in IO Interactive's numbering (Chapter 17 in PowerPyx's list), set at MI6 headquarters in London during an attack. It ends with the final boss fight and earns the Gold trophy For king and country.
