GoldenEye 007
GoldenEye 007, made by Rare and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64 on Aug 25, 1997, holds a Metascore of 96, the highest on this list (Metacritic). Metacritic also lists it on Xbox 360, Xbox One and Xbox Series X. Activision remade it in 2010 for the Wii and again as GoldenEye 007: Reloaded in 2011, both by Eurocom. 007 First Light nods to it too: the Nintendo Switch 2 Deluxe Edition includes a GoldenEye Suit outfit (IO Interactive).
The EA and Activision years
Electronic Arts published the Bond games on this list from Tomorrow Never Dies (1999) to From Russia With Love (2005), among them Agent Under Fire, NightFire and Everything or Nothing (Metacritic). Everything or Nothing, a third-person game, scored 84 on PS2 and GameCube, the best of the EA era. Activision followed with Quantum of Solace (2008), Blood Stone (2010), the GoldenEye remakes and 007 Legends (2012), whose 45 on Xbox 360 is the lowest on this list (Metacritic); Game Rant's 007 First Light review calls it "abysmal" (Game Rant). In the discussion after IGN's May 29, 2026 video review, Luke Reilly calls the Activision run "mediocre overall" and Legends "terrible".
Where does 007 First Light fit?
It is the first Bond game in the list above in almost 14 years, the first made by IO Interactive, and an original origin story rather than a film tie-in: a 26-year-old Bond, played by Patrick Gibson, earns his number (IO Interactive). It is played in third person, like Everything or Nothing, but its structure comes from IOI's Hitman games, with sandbox levels and several routes to each goal (see 007 First Light vs Hitman). It sold more than 1.5 million copies in 24 hours and 4 million in three months (Shacknews; IO Interactive). Digital Foundry's May 28, 2026 tech review calls it "the ultimate version of the formula started by 007 Everything or Nothing". See 007 First Light and Reviews.
Is 007 First Light the best Bond game since GoldenEye?
Critics say so, and the numbers agree. TheGamer's review-day roundup was headlined "007 First Light Is The Best Bond Game Since GoldenEye, According To Its Review Scores" (OpenCritic, TheGamer), and Tom's Guide called it "the finest James Bond video game in nearly 30 years" (OpenCritic). IGN's Luke Reilly, granting that it does not share the "seismic importance" of GoldenEye 007, calls it "the best Bond game I've ever played" in his May 29, 2026 video review. On Metacritic it holds 87 on PS5 and 88 on Xbox Series X as of Nov 4, 2026, above every Bond game since 1997 except GoldenEye 007 itself (96). Not everyone agrees on the game: PC Gamer gave it 65/100 (OpenCritic).
How does 007 First Light compare with GoldenEye 007?
They are very different games, made almost 29 years apart. 007 First Light is a third-person stealth-action adventure with an original story, built around sneaking, bluffing, gadgets and set pieces, with no multiplayer (PowerPyx). GoldenEye's score of 96 is still the higher one. See Stealth and Disguises and Gadgets.
