PC Performance and Path Tracing

007 First Light added full path tracing on PC on Sep 15, 2026, made with NVIDIA for GeForce RTX cards, with DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction. IO Interactive expects about 60 fps on an RTX 5070 at 1080p and over 200 fps on an RTX 5090 with 6x frame generation.

007 First Light gained full path tracing on PC on Sep 15, 2026, a free update made with NVIDIA for GeForce RTX cards that also brought DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction. IO Interactive's guidance is Medium path tracing on an RTX 5070 at 1080p or an RTX 5080 at 1440p, for about 60 fps, and High on an RTX 5090 up to 4K, where 6x frame generation gives over 200 fps. AMD cards got FSR 4.1 upscaling with the same update and FSR Frame Generation in update 1.3.0 on Oct 1, 2026. The first weeks of path tracing were rough: two hotfixes in ten days dealt with its crashes and slow spots.

What is the path tracing update?

Path tracing replaces the game's mix of rasterized and ray traced lighting with light simulated as rays for every pixel, which is what film rendering does and what only recent GeForce RTX cards can run at playable rates. IOI announced it on Aug 25, 2026 and released it on Sep 15 as the step after update 1.1.1; IOI's site has no notes page for a "1.2.0", and the path tracing release is the step before Hotfix 1.2.1. It is PC-only. The consoles keep their ray traced global illumination (PS5 and Xbox Performance Modes).

Which GPU do you need for path tracing?

IOI's settings guidance, published with Hotfix 1.2.2 on Sep 25, 2026:

GPU Path tracing Resolution Expected frame rate
GeForce RTX 5070 Medium 1080p About 60 fps; above 60 with 2x frame generation
GeForce RTX 5080 Medium 1440p About 60 fps; above 60 with 2x frame generation
GeForce RTX 5090 High Up to 4K 200+ fps with 6x frame generation

Source: IO Interactive: 1.2.2 Game Update, Sep 25, 2026.

With it, IOI recommends DLSS Super Resolution on Auto and DLSS Multi Frame Generation at 2x to 6x. Frame generation multiplies the frames shown, not the frames the game simulates, so it raises smoothness more than responsiveness; the "about 60 fps" figures are the rates before it. IOI gives no guidance for RTX 40-series or older cards, so how they fare is not stated in its notes.

So until mid-September, AMD players had no upscaler from AMD in the game; the path tracing update fixed that, and Extended Operations added AMD's frame generation two weeks later.

Path tracing hotfixes

Path tracing arrived with problems, and IOI's next three patches dealt with them:

The chapter numbers are IOI's own, 00 to 10 (Missions List). The rest of every patch is on Patch Notes and Updates.

Other PC performance fixes

Before path tracing, IOI's patches had dealt with the PC launch's own issues: texture loading errors and a frequent GPU rendering crash in 1.0.2 (Jun 2, 2026); out-of-memory crashes, corrupted PC saves and PCs defaulting to a low-power GPU in 1.0.5 (Jun 15); cinematics playing at double speed after alt-tab in 1.1.0 (Jul 24); and a black screen and crash at launch in 1.1.1 (Aug 27). A laptop with two GPUs that runs badly may still be using its integrated one; check that Windows assigns the game to the dedicated card.

Digital Foundry has tested path tracing twice. In its DF Direct clip of Sep 30, 2026, five days after Hotfix 1.2.2, it recalls that an RTX 5070, though the recommended specs named it, at first "seemed to run out of memory" with dreadful performance, and that the new patch is "very, very good". On the patched game, the RTX 5070 with console-equivalent settings, Medium path tracing, 1440p with DLSS Performance and 2x frame generation gave frame rates "much much better" than before, with latency of about 50 milliseconds.

On an RTX 5080, Digital Foundry ran High path tracing at 1800p with DLSS Performance (900p internal) and medium volumetrics, with performance and latency similar to the 5070's. It also found latency lower with frame generation on than off, about 50 against 80 milliseconds, and its working theory is that NVIDIA Reflex is active only with frame generation; the game has no Reflex toggle. These are one outlet's tests on two cards, not IOI's figures. The minimum and recommended hardware without path tracing is on PC System Requirements.
